It was a great opportunity and honor that our JV Girls, JV Boys, Varsity Girls, and Varsity Boys teams were able to participate in the SCISA Class A Region III Tournament Championship games on Saturday, February 12th, 2011. All four games were very intense and all of our Covenant student-athletes played extremely hard.
After a valient effort in the championship game, the JV Girls finished the season as Regular Season and Tournament Runner-Up. It was definitely a learning year for many of these young girls, but some great progress was made. Eltiana Mitchell was named to the All-Tournament team for her play during the championship game.
The JV Boys game was extremely intense from start to finish. Covenant had split the season series with Aiken Prep during the regular season and Coach Self knew it would take a phenomenal effort by his players to pull off the championship. In the end, Covenant made the plays down the stretch to pull out the 29-23 victory. Caleb Wilson and Michael Gutshall were both named to the All-Tournament team. Caleb scored the first 8 points for the Eagles in the championship game and finished with 13. Bobby Bishop was named the Tournament MVP after leading the Eagles in scoring during the season and during the championship game with 14 points.
The Varsity Girls took on South Aiken Baptist in the region championship game. Even after finishing a perfect 4-0 in region play, Coach Peckham knew this game would not be easy. Kate Jeffcoat had missed practices all week due to sickness and also was playing with a dislocated thumb. However, the other girls really stepped up and made the plays necessary to pull out the victory, 50-28. Isabella Gantt, Aliya Dumas, and Berkeley Bishop were selected to the All-Region team for their efforts during the season. Kate Jeffcoat was named the Region Player of the Year. She led the Eagles with 18.9 PPG and 11.2 RPG. Marissa Brown was selected to the All-Tourament team after leading the Eagles in scoring in the championship game with 20 points. Aliya Dumas was also selected to the All-Tournament team. Kate Jeffcoat was given the Tournament MVP after a valient effort in the title game, battling through sickness and injury. Due to the fact of winning Player of the Year and Tournament MVP, Kate will be given an opporunity to compete in an All-Star game on March 5th with some of the best players in Class A/AA. Congratulations Kate! The Varsity Girls season is not over just yet. At an overall record of 16-7, the Varsity Girls will play Ben Lippen on Monday night in Coach Peckham’s first game coaching against his alma mater. Then, they will play on Friday at a time and location TBD after the State Tournament brackets are released this Wednesday. Please come out and support the Varsity Girls as they make a run at the State Championship.
The Varsity Boys team was matched up against a familar foe in the region title game. The Glenforest Bulldogs couldn’t wait to get another shot at the Eagles after the improbable 40-39 victory for Covenant in last Friday’s game. The game got off to rough start for the Eagles, but they were able to cut the deficit to 9-13 entering the 2nd quarter. Several players surrounding Josh Simmons stepped up for the Bulldogs by hitting some tough shots, as the Eagles went into the locker room at halftime down 22-31. The 2nd half turned out to be a little more of the same for the Eagles, they had no answer for Josh Simmons and the tremendous height advantage of the Bulldogs. Emmanuel Bazemore and David Golden finished with 17 and 16 points apiece, respectively. But it wasn’t enough, as the Eagles went down 61-44.
David Golden, Emmanuel Bazemore, and Jonathan Peckham were selected to the All-Region team for their efforts during the season. Will Gasaway and Nico Legaspi were selected to the All-Tournament team. The Eagles finished the year 17-9 and were named Co-Regular Season Champions of Region 3-A as well as the Runner-Up of the Region 3-A Tournament. However, the season continues for the Eagles as they will be guaranteed a berth in the Class A State Tournament. Covenant will be in action on Saturday, February 19th at a time and location TBA. Come out and support the Eagles as they look to make a deep run in the state tournament. GO EAGLES!!!
