Cross country is a sport that takes time, dedication, and lots of endurance. The cross country team at Covenant participates in several 5k (3.1 miles) races throughout the fall. It is a race against yourself. Everyone on the team tries to beat their best time in which they completed the race. The school has a plaque that they keep on the wall in the school office. This plaque holds the names of the “top ten” male runners for our school and the “top ten” female runners. This year like every year each individual is trying to get their name put on the plaque for all to see.
The team this year consists of the following runners: Elijah Bazemore, Mac Folks, Michael Gutshall, Miriam Crain, Nancy B., Gene Suydam, Kate Jeffcoat, William Ward, and Veronica Lewis. Also, along with the regular team, the varsity and junior varsity guys and girls basketball teams are conditioning with Coach Collier and Coach Peckham for their upcoming season, and will compete in two races. Coach Collier is the Physical Education teacher as well as the cross country coach. He started the cross country program at Covenant and even had a team win the State Title in Fall of 2002. He says educating children about God is important to him in that God gave us our bodies and we need to use them to please and honor God in everything we do.
Elijah Bazemore is a seventh grader at Covenant, and he says that the reason he runs is because it makes him feel like a healthier person and puts him in a relaxed mood. Each year the team sets a personal goal to achieve or even beat. Elijah’s goal this year is to run a 22 minute 5k race. Nancy B. is an eighth grader at Covenant and she says that her favorite part of running is seeing how fast she and her team can run after all their hard work. Her goal this year is to run a half-mile in less than four minutes.
We look forward to seeing how well this season will go and all the accomplishments of these committed runners. They have seven races coming up and their SCISA state meet will occur on October 31st. Everybody is in full training right now getting ready for their next race this Wednesday. Come out to cheer and support our runners!!
